About the Project
Awa Spi Dam is a core-type embankment dam built in Chamchamal, in the Sulaymaniyah province of Iraq. The project was carried out and completed by Bend Yapı Company for the client Maksomer İnşaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş.
Together with the dam body, two structures were built: a spillway and a bottom outlet, which provide controlled passage and intake of water.
Scope of Work
- Construction of the core-type embankment dam body
- Construction of the spillway structure
- Construction of the bottom outlet structure
Core-Type Embankment Dams
In core-type embankment dams, a low-permeability core lies at the center of the body; the fill layers on either side of the core provide the body’s load-bearing capacity and stability. This system is widely preferred on sites where local materials can be used.
